Natural edge turning is a popular feature these days.
Quite simply, the item is positioned, and turned, so that the outside edge of the tree (bark and all) becomes the top lip of the bowl or vase.
1. Since your stock piece will likely be significantly out of balance (since the uneven edges are not symetrical), you must take all precautions to secure the work while you are working with it.
2. I always complete a rough shaping with the tailstock engaged, for turnring between centers, leaving a small column in the center of the inside. This also helps to protect the bark from coming off.
3. You may wish to use a little super glue between the bark and inner wood to secure it to the inner wood better.
